Renowned Music Instructor to Offer Performance Seminar at Ithaca College

ITHACA, NY — Burton Kaplan, faculty member at the Manhattan School of Music and author of “Practicing for Artistic Success: The Musician’s Guide to Self-Empowerment,” will visit Ithaca College on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9 and 10, to present “The Musical Path to Technique: Design of the Heart.” This two-session, eight-hour workshop is aimed at helping musicians integrate music and technique into practice and performance. The instruction is available for all instrumentalists. The sessions will take place in the James J. Whalen Center for Music.

Participation in the two sessions costs $125; Auditing options are also available for a fee. To register, visit, click on “Performance Power” and then on “Upcoming Events.” More information is also available by contacting Susan Waterbury, School of Music faculty member, at or (607) 274-3679.

“In the workshop, students will try out new strategies to help them attach their musical imaginations to their techniques,” Kaplan said. “A new way of conceiving and processing musical notation will be presented, enabling technique to evolve into a structurally sensible and emotionally compelling sound.”

In addition, Kaplan will also introduce students to ways to coordinate their muscles and emotions to create music that compels the attention of the audience.
