Ithaca College Student Media Earn National Honors
ITHACA, NY — The student newspaper and radio station at Ithaca College each earned national awards this past fall. “The Ithacan” was presented with the 2010 Online Pacemaker Award for overall excellence in online journalism, while 92 WICB-FM was honored for Best Sports Play-By-Play by College Broadcasters, Inc. (CBI).
The Pacemakers, presented each year by the Associated College Press, are widely regarded as “the Pulitzer Prize of collegiate journalism,” and are among the most prestigious student journalism awards in the country. This is the fourth time in the past five years that the online version of “The Ithacan” has taken top honors.
The newspaper also was awarded second place in the print category and third place in the website category in the Best of Show Awards.
Play-by-play is one of the most competitive categories in CBI’s annual student production awards. Broadcasters Nathan March ’11 and Gavin Cote ’12 were recognized for excellence in their call of the women’s basketball game between Ithaca College and Utica College in the spring of 2010. WICB was a finalist in three other categories this year: Best Student Media Website, Best DJ and Best Feature.
The other student-operated station in the Roy H. Park School of Communications — VIC Radio — was a CBI finalist in the Best Regularly Scheduled Program category for “Disney Mania,” hosted by Jessica Brandt ’10.
The awards were presented at the National Student Media Convention, held in Louisville, KY, in late October.
