ITHACA, NY — “The Ithacan,” the weekly student newspaper at Ithaca College, earned state and national honors in recent student journalism competitions. The publication was presented with a Gold Crown Award by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA), won the first place Apple Award for Best Newspaper from the College Media Association (CMA), and named the best college newspaper in New York State by the New York Press Association (NYPA).
CSPA awarded “The Ithacan” a College Hybrid Publication Gold Crown for the 2012-13 academic year. The category recognizes publications that work to combine digital and print versions as one. Crown Awards are the highest recognition given by the CSPA to a student print or digital medium. Entries were judged on the overall excellence of writing/editing, design, content, concept, photography, art and graphics.
“The Ithacan” was recognized as the best college newspaper in New York State for 2013 after winning the NYPA Better Newspaper Competition, taking home first place honors for best sports coverage and website; both first and second place for best column writing; both first and third place for best photography; second place for best editorial; third place for general excellence; and honorable mention for design.
The NYPA was founded in 1853 to help publishers of small newspapers meet the needs of their communities more effectively by providing better information for their readers. The annual Better Newspaper Competition measures papers of similar size against one another in categories such as news, photography and advertising.
