Academic Misconduct Policy and Procedure

Academic honesty is a cornerstone of the mission of Ithaca College.  All members of the academic community are expected to assist in maintaining the integrity of Ithaca College, which includes reporting incidents of academic misconduct. Such instances may be reported to a faculty member, the dean of the school involved, or the director of Student Conduct & Community Standards.

For information regarding the specific policies and procedures related to Academic Misconduct, please review section 7.1.2.6 Academic Misconduct Hearings in the Student Conduct Code and section 7.1.4 Standards of Academic Conduct of the college policy manual.

Additional information and resources for faculty and students

Faculty members, please review the step by step instructions in this section prior to completing and submitting the Academic Misconduct form.

The Academic Misconduct Process was updated at the end of the spring 2023 academic year to better support our students and faculty while continuing to uphold the principles of honesty, responsibility, and fairness in our academic community. Please familiarize yourself with the following process:

1.  Initial Response: If you suspect academic misconduct, gather information and approach the student in a non-confrontational manner. Discuss your concerns and allow the student to provide their perspective.

2. Documentation: Maintain thorough documentation of the incident, including any relevant communications, assignments, or assessments related to the alleged misconduct. This documentation will be important throughout the process.

3. Report the Incident: If, based on your discussion with the student, you believe that a violation of the Student Conduct Code and/or the Standards of Academic Conduct has occurred, submit a report detailing the incident, using this online reporting form Include all relevant information and evidence.

The submitted report will be reviewed by the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards and the Assistant Director of Student Conduct (or designee) will schedule a meeting with the student to discuss the allegations. This meeting will proceed in accordance with the “Administrative Hearing Procedure” under section 7.1.2.4.1 of the Student Conduct Code.

Following an Administrative Hearing meeting, faculty may be contacted for additional information or to participate in an academic misconduct board, should the student request a board. Faculty are encouraged to participate in these procedures in order to ensure that all information is available and to answer questions that may arise throughout the process.

Your commitment to upholding academic integrity is greatly appreciated. By following this process, we can maintain a fair and just academic environment for all students and ensure the values of Ithaca College are upheld.

When a faculty member suspects that an academic dishonesty violation has occurred, they will initially reach out to meet with the student to discuss.  Following that meeting, the faculty may report the incident to the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards.  All submitted reports will be reviewed by the Assistant Director of Student Conduct (or designee), who will schedule a meeting with the student to discuss the allegations. Following an Administrative Hearing meeting, students may be found responsible or not responsible. If found responsible, students have the opportunity to request that their case be heard by a Conduct Review Board (per the procedures outlined in the Student Conduct Code). Faculty will be encouraged to participate in these procedures in order to ensure that all information is available and to answer questions that may arise throughout the process.
