Alumni give current scholars advice during workshops

By Emily LaPierre

Need some help on a resume? Ever wondered how to put a reel together? Looking for some advice for life after graduation?

Each Alumni Weekend, former Park Scholars return to Ithaca and answers questions like these and much more for current scholars. This past weekend’s program started off with panels Saturday afternoon on topics such as reel and resume review, digital branding and networking, and how to maintain a life of service. For some, this was their first experience meeting many wonderful Park Scholar alumni, whereas others got the chance to catch up with old friends.

Sophomore Park Scholar, Erica Steinhoff said she liked the “Giving Back While Getting Paid” workshop the best. “We were able to able to get personal advice from the alumni about how we can not only incorporate service into our lives after graduating, but also our careers … It was inspiring to hear about the alumni that have dedicated their lives and careers completely to service, because that is what I aspire to do after graduation.”

As a junior Park Scholar who is getting ready to head out to Los Angeles next semester, I found this past weekend to be extremely helpful. I was able to get some really helpful tips on how to keep my resume concise and consistent, and how to best catch a future employer’s eye. Naturally, plenty of the alumni either participated in the LA program or live there now. I got some great advice on things to do while on the West Coast and ideas for places to apply for internships.

It wasn’t all business, however; as with every Park Scholar event there was plenty of good food to munch on. The menu included the infamous chicken fingers, Swedish meatballs, and a fresh fruit platter (but not fruit kabobs). Students of present and past chatted over hors d’oeuvres and refreshments about current endeavors and former experiences. They bonded over traveling across the world and got advice on how to balance class and busy extracurricular schedules.

Each year, Park Scholar alumni go above and beyond to reach out to the current scholars and bestow upon them their wisdom. Although we all have different interests and experiences, we can always bond over this incredible program. The alumni commitment to help each and every one of us is what inspires Park Scholars to continue the tradition of excellence as we take one step closer to moving on from our home at Ithaca College.
