Health and Safety Checks

Health and Safety Checks are required in all Residence Halls and apartments each September. These checks are conducted to increase safety within our residential buildings by timely identification and removal of prohibited appliances and other violations from student rooms. These checks also allow our staff an opportunity to educate residents through positive, personal contact.

During the check, Resident Assistants (RAs) conduct a non-invasive scan of the room. They do not open drawers, refrigerators, or closets, but may move (or ask the resident to move) items blocking outlets.

During Thanksgiving and Spring Breaks, inspections are conducted by Residential Life staff in every Residence Hall (apartments are inspected during only one of these breaks). During Winter Break, Environmental Health and Safety staff conducts inspections in every Residence Hall and apartment.

The New York State Department of State's Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC) routinely inspects all Ithaca College facilities' common areas and some randomly selected rooms, apartments, and suites for fire code violations. Ithaca College works with OFPC to make changes as identified during these inspections.

Additional Health and Safety information (e.g., approved and prohibited appliances) is available in the Room Guide and Apartment Guide which are featured on this page.
