IMC Major Jusan Hamilton '13 Breaks Athletic School Record

It takes a highly motivated and well-organized person to balance being a student-athlete. It takes talent to succeed both in the classroom and on the field of competition. Jusan Hamilton has found success both as a student and mastered his skills as an athlete as well. Hamilton, class of 2013, is seeking dual degrees as a student, double majoring in integrated marketing communications and sociology. As an athlete, Hamilton is a multi-event competitor on the Ithaca College track and field team. On March 3, 2012, the Eastern Conference Athletic Championship track meet was held in the famous New York City Armory indoor track. Hamilton competed in the 35# weight throw event and recorded a throw further than anyone else has thrown in the history of Ithaca College indoor track and field.

Hamilton passed the previous school record of 16.87-meters, set in 2003 by Andrew Davidson. Hamilton’s throw of 17.70-meters earned him a ranking of 28 in the country for Division III athletes and a ranking of second in the Atlantic region. For his performance in the weight throw, Hamilton earned the Empire 8 Athlete of the Week Award and New York State Collegiate Athlete of the Week Award.

Hamilton said, “I owe all of my successes in this event to the outstanding coaching of my event coach, Jake Edelman. The 35# weight throw is one of the most technical events in track and field. Coach Jake’s knowledge of the event and passion for studying the event were transferred to me, and I have been able to use that coaching to my advantage. The skills I have learned from Coach Jake gave me confidence as a competitor and mental preparation for an event. These skills have helped me as a student as well. I have been able to apply these attributes to my career preparation in IMC, where confidence and mental preparation are crucial to successful presentations and interactions with clients.”

The Eastern Conference Athletic Championship concluded indoor track and field Competition for Hamilton this year. He is now preparing for outdoor competition where his main event is the hammer throw, which is a similar throwing event to the 35# weight throw. Hamilton said, “Hammer is my favorite event in track and field and my best throwing event. All of my training for the past year in the weight room and at practice has been motivated by my desire to be a top hammer thrower.”

The outdoor track and field season kicks off March 31, 2012 with the Ithaca Invitational. Hamilton will return next fall to indoor track and field competition with the goal of beating his school record in the weight throw. Visit for the latest track and field news and schedule.
