Judy Hyman

Panelist: Music Composition for Film & Television

Judy Hyman makes music for film, television, and multimedia. On her own and in collaboration with her husband, Jeff Claus, she has created scores for numerous nationally broadcast, award-winning PBS documentaries that explore a wide range of topics. She has also done scores for many feature films starring such actors as Bruce Dern, Martin Sheen, Genevieve Bujold, Jacqueline Bisset, Michael J. Fox, Rip Torn, Tantoo Cardinal, Luis Guzmán, and Treat Williams, among others. She was awarded an Emmy for her music for the documentary The Cultivated Life: Thomas Jefferson and Wine and has been featured in Electronic Musician magazine. A graduate of Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music with a concentration in violin, Judy came to film scoring from the world of live performance and recording. She’s a founding member of the alt-trad band the Horse Flies, with whom she toured extensively in the United States, Canada, and Europe, and has recorded eight albums. She has also toured and recorded a number of times with singer/writer Natalie Merchant. While she plays a lot of alt-folk and alt-rock, she is, at heart, an Appalachian-style fiddler. She’s been featured several times in Fiddler Magazine, which included her as one of 20 master fiddlers in a booklet/CD set. She was also commissioned to create a new waltz to celebrate Fiddler Magazine’s 25th anniversary in 2019.
