Martin Czembor came to New York from Berlin, Germany, in 1993 where he had previously graduated from the Tonmeister program at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler. Starting in the environment of New York City’s music recording studios, he has worked with a variety of artists, such as Eykah Badu and D’Angelo, A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, the Backstreet Boys, and Bette Midler.
Martin’s work as scoring engineer for composer Philip Glass enabled him to participate in projects such as Martin Scorsese’s Kundunand Godfrey Reggio’s Qatsitrilogy. Building on his musical background, Martin worked as a re-recording mixer at New York’s Sound One on such projects as Scorsese’s The Bluesseries, Antoine Fuqua’s Lightning in a Bottle,and Reggio’s Naqoyqatsi. He has also worked on other feature film projects with directors such as Robert Altman (A Prairie Home Companion), James Ivory (The White Countess), and Robert De Niro (The Good Shepherd). As part of the legendary Sound One experience with some of New York’s most acclaimed re-recording mixers and sound editorial crews, Martin considers working there to be among his most valuable mentoring experiences.
An independent re-recording mixer since 2007, Martin has continued to expand his work with the New York independent film community through collaborations with directors such as Tim Robbins, Craig Lucas, Campbell Scott, Edward Burns, Kenneth Lonergan, Rebecca Miller, and Brad Anderson. Some of the most recent films he has worked on include Paul Schrader’s First Reformed and Scott Z. Burns’sThe Report.
His great interest in working in the documentary genre—inspired as well by longstanding Sound One tradition—has allowed Martin to work with directors such as Ken Burns, Alex Gibney, Rick Burns, Maro Chermayeff, Jeff Dupré, and Matt Heineman. His work on such highly regarded documentary features as Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Presentand The Rolling Stones: Charlie Is My Darlingreflects his continued dedication.
In more recent years, Martin has found additional interest and fascination in working on a slate of scripted series in the changing and expanding world of television work and its newer online outlets. Series like Cary Fukunaga’s True Detective(HBO), Baz Luhrman’s The Get Down (Netflix), Alex Gibney and Dan Futterman’s The Looming Tower(Hulu), and Cary Fukunaga’s most recent Maniac(Netflix) represent his wide range of creative work in the ever expanding genre.
Since 2011, Martin has enjoyed mentoring and introducing film students to real-world filmmaking experiences in New York City and has contributed his time and experience to mixing many of Ithaca College’s student film projects each semester in Professor Marlena Grzaslewicz’s classes.
