Michael Treat

Trumpet, Elective Instructor

Michael Treat is a music educator, performer and composer in central New York state. He holds both a M.M. and B.M in music education from Ithaca College and is currently Director of Bands at DeWitt Middle School and director of the Ithaca High School Jazz Band in Ithaca, NY. He is the trumpet instructor at the Ithaca College Summer Music Academy Intermediate Division and a faculty member at the Opus Ithaca Jazz Camp. He was previously an instrumental music teacher in the Kingston City School District and prior to that was Director of Music at the EAC Montessori School of Ithaca.

Mike has had the pleasure of guest directing concert and jazz band bands at the district, county and Area All State level. He has directed ensembles and taught improvisation workshops for numerous schools and summer programs and has presented to the CMEA and the Ulster County Music Educators on topics related to teaching improvisation. He is a contributing author to a soon to be released text on jazz pedagogy.

As a performer, Mike has played with numerous jazz groups, wind bands, brass quintets and pit orchestras. He has had the pleasure of collaborating with some of the world’s finest jazz artists including Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Paquito D’Rivera and Larry Grenadier. He has performed at the Blue Note and Iridium Jazz Clubs in New York and has appeared with ensembles in France and Aruba. He leads and composes for the Mike Treat Quintet and is a former member of the Fall Creek Brass Band.

Beyond making music, Mike enjoys spending time with his family and is an active outdoorsman. He resides happily in Ithaca, NY with his wife, Erin, and his sons, Hayden and Kieran.
