According to Twinings (The British Tea Company), the tradition of ‘afternoon tea’ started in the 1800s. Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, who at the time was a close friend of Queen Victoria and a prominent figure within London society complained of "having that sinking feeling" during the late afternoon, and so began to have a small bite and a cup of tea in the afternoon. It has since become a much-loved British tradition, and the ‘small bite’ aspect has... grown!
A quintessential afternoon tea experience unfolds with an array of delicacies, featuring meticulously crafted square-cut sandwiches, warm baked scones adorned with velvety clotted cream and luscious jam, and a tempting selection of exquisitely designed patisseries.
