This plan of the Inner shrine shows the two identically
dimensioned adjacent rectangles that receive the shrine structures in an
alternating cycle of 20 years. When not in use, the empty alternate site,
at right in the above plan, is not entered. It is inhabited only by a tiny
gabled structure covering a sacred "heart pillar." The built site,
shown at left, is approached from a grand stone stair at its south end (top
of the picture). The general public is allowed to penetrate only as far
as the outer gate (marked in black). Circulation for priests would continue
through the aligned central gates to the inner structures.
