The shrine and treasure house structures contained within
the sacred precincts at Ise may draw upon the form of early rice granaries,
or storehouses, which were raised on platforms to remove them from dampness
and covered with simple but massively overhanging thatched roofs. The left
image shows such a granary, located in the Hida Folk Village, a reconstructed
rural complex near Takayama. The comparison shows the similar roof materials
and profile used in the farm and shrine types, and the elevation of their
main rectangular enclosures on wooden stilts.
