Sight

Sight lines are deliberately constrained at Ise in a number of ways. The opaque perimeter fences prevent full views of the revered structures from the outside, thus heightening their mystery and majesty. The gates that break the fences are hung with curtains that likewise conceal the buildings within; only fleeting impressions can be gained as the curtain occasionally billows out of its blocking position, as shown at right.
