• ***All adjectives agree in number
and gender with the noun they modify.
Add -e for feminine, -s for plural.
Une grande fille. -->
Trois grandes filles.
• Adjectives ending in -eau >
-eaux in plural. Those ending in -al > -aux.
Un beau livre. --> deux
beaux livres, un ami loyal >
des amis loyaux
• Most adjectives follow their nouns: une
histoire intéressante, des pages difficiles
• Adjectives referring to the following categories precede their nouns. N.B.: The acrostic, BANGS, is a trick, not a rule. There are a few other adjectives that precede that do not fit these categories (e.g., autre: une autre raison).
Beauty un bel enfant, de jolies robes
(but laid (ugly) follows: une robe laide.)Age une vieille dame, un jeune garçon Numbers mille mercis, trois chats Goodness une bonne blague, un mauvais repas Size un petit livre, un granddébat
• Some adjectives change meaning when they change position. Note that the literal meaning usually follows (i.e., in the normal adj. position).

| un certain point (some, indefinite) | un point certain (sure, certain) |

| le pauvre homme (pitiable) | un homme pauvre (no money) |
| ma propre robe (own) | ma robe propre (clean) |
| un seul garçon (single, just 1) | un garçon seul (alone, lonely) |
| la dernière semaine (the very last in a series) | la semaine dernière (week preceding this one) |
• Some irregular adjectives (just memorize them). Those ending in -s, -x do not change in the plural.
