Trouble Spots

BRING vs. TAKE: amener, emmener, apporter, emporter

•Bring implies an action towards the speaker; take implies an action away from the speaker.

In French, the verbs beginning with a- both mean towards. (amener, apporter)

The 2 beginning em- mean away from. (emmener, emporter)

Mener, by itself, means to lead. Porter means to carry. This explains why the two verbs using mener are used for people (or animals) and why those using porter are for things (or babies, who can't get places by themselves).

• bring:

a. people: amener
Amène ta soeur quand tu viendras demain.

b. things: apporter
Apportez toujours vos livres en classe.

• take, take away:

---people: emmener

Philippe a emmené toute sa famille à la plage.

---things: emporter

Ont-ils emporté les ordures ce matin?
["Did they take the garbage this morning?"]

Emportez ce dessert--J'ai déjà trop mangé!
["Take away this dessert!. . . "]

Une pizza à emporter.
[a take-out pizza]
