|A complex narrative structure infuses this Korean romantic comedy.|
Couples (Jeong Yong-ki, Korea, 2011; 110 min.) Yoo-Suk (Kim Joo-Hyuk has gone into debt to buy a condominium for bride-to-be Na-Ri (Lee Si-Young), who then vanishes leaving only a text message. He hires a private detective to track her down, as his tea business and world fall apart. He's also been subject to an insurance scam and accused of sexually harassing another hostage when held during a bank robbery. Just as he starts to fall for a woman traffic cop, Ae-Yeon (Lee Yoon-Ji), Na-Ri reenters the scene. Na-Ri, it turns out, is on the run from Byung-Chan (Gong Hyung-Jin), an aging gangster who only wants to retire. The film interweaves a tapestry of narratives that are both funny and surprising.
