Maiden Voyages Project

The Maiden Voyages Project

Valerie Hird (USA)

For The Maiden Voyage Project, Valerie Hird collaborated with women in Egypt, Iran, Jordan, and Palestine, all but one of whom chose to remain anonymous to her.

The women recorded aspects of their lives on a set day of the month for the period of a year.

Along with Hird’s own entries, the project maps the landscapes of daily routines, intimate reflections, and dreams of five women who share certain experiences, expectations, and aspirations and yet also share important differences.

Hind’s collaborators trusted her to interpret, illustrate, and animate their personal thoughts. For audiences unfamiliar with the Middle East, this open-access project brings what Hind defines as a ‘measure of reality’ into discourses dominated by U.S. media.
