New York State Math & Science Teaching Incentive Program

Note: This is a newly-created program to increase the number of middle and secondary math and science teachers in New York State. Funds are not yet available -- continue to check this Web site for updates.

New York State Math & Science Teaching Incentive Program grants can help eligible students pay for college. Full-time students matriculating in an approved undergraduate or graduate program that leads to a math or science teaching career in secondary education are eligible to apply. This is a competitive grant program which will be awarded to 500 students each year after the successful completion of the school year.

Students receiving Math & Science Teaching Incentive Program grants must enter into a contract to teach math or science for five years on a full-time basis in New York State.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a New York State Math & Science Teaching Incentive grant, a student must:
  • Attend school at a bachelor?s or master?s degree level.
  • Be a full-time student, taking at least 12 credits per semester.
  • Matriculate in an approved undergraduate or graduate program that leads to a math or science teaching career in secondary education.


Award Amounts and Schedule

The Math & Science Teaching Incentive Program grant amount will be equal to the cost of undergraduate tuition at a SUNY school or tuition charged, whichever is less.

The grant will be:

  • Awarded annually after the successful completion of the academic year.
    - the first payments will be made after the Spring 2007 term.
  • Awarded for a maximum of 5 years:
    - 4 years maximum of undergraduate study.
    - 1 year maximum of graduate study.

    Service Agreement

    Students receiving Math & Science Teaching Incentive Program grants will be required to complete a service contract in which they agree to:
  • Teach math or science on a full-time basis in New York State for five years.
  • Repay the amounts disbursed plus interest through conversion to a FFEL PLUS loan rate, with the rate determined by the date the contract was signed, if they fail to fulfill their teaching obligation pursuant to the terms of their service agreement.
