Photographic portraits of Tibetans in diaspora
"Politics of Representation"
March 30
Ven. Salden Kunga and Dhundup Dorjee Zhurkhang,
vice president and secretary, respectively, of the Ithaca Tibetan
Association - Namgyal Monastery, discussed the significance of
the massive dissemination of photographs of Tibetans for their
political struggle.
More than 50 students exhibited over 100 works,
ranging from oil paintings of still lifes to digital video installations.
The nature of the show in part the ultimate grading occasion
makes collaboration difficult, but we can expect a decisive
move in the direction of collaborative effort in the future.

Photo Installation by Tania M.
Sãmano Palacios and Nicoletta Kalatha
June 24August 24
This complex installation mixed photographs
"taken" by the artists during their stay in Mexico
with photographs "taken" from art books. The exhibition,
sponsored by the Office of the Provost, exemplified an important
postmodern concern: the politics of identity. Is it possible
today in our society of spectacle, where images are reproduced
and disseminated at unprecedented speed, to have an objective
understanding of the "other"? How do stereotypes define
and construct our perception of the other? And how can we see
and imagine ourselves beyond cultural clichés?
