Look to H&S for Excellence
Two of the three annual Ithaca College excellence awards went to faculty in the School of Humanities and Sciences this year.
The Excellence in Teaching Award went to Michael Rogers for his subject mastery, presentation, interaction with students, and dedication to teaching. Since his arrival at Ithaca College in the fall of 2003, he has made a tremendous impact on students and faculty, distinguishing himself as a leader in the application of innovative teaching methods. Chair of the physics department Dan Briotta said, “Michael has shown us a new, more effective way to teach physics. He has mentored us in our attempts to master the new techniques—even providing us with the ideal physical environment in which to implement these techniques in a new classroom facility, which will open fall 2006.”
Katharyn Howd Machan, winner of the Excellence in Scholarship Award, has taught writing at Ithaca College for 29 years and has published more than 1,000 poems and 24 collections, many of which have won awards. Her celebrated series of poems Redwing: Voices from 1888 was praised by poet and novelist Marge Piercy. Named the first poet laureate of Tompkins County, Machan continues a very active schedule of readings and other performances of her work. She was founder of the Feminist Women’s Writing Workshop and was active in the development of the Ithaca College women’s studies program, which led to the annual WomenSpeak conference.
