Sustainable Tompkins, an organization devoted to catalyzing sustainable development in our region, has awarded a "Sign of Sustainability" to the IC Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences and the Gerontology Institute for their joint development of the 2013 Retirees in Service to the Environment (RISE) program. The IC entities partnered with staff at Longview to implement the RISE program, which involved elders at Longview and from the community in a training program to become effective environmental stewards. Students involved with the IC Natural Lands volunteer stewards program assisted with the training of the older adults. Plans are now underway for the 2014 RISE program.

On Thursday, November 14 at 7pm in Textor 101, nature cartoonist Rosemary Mosco will discuss the challenges and joys of building a career that combines science and art. She'll reflect on the use of comics and other unusual media as tools for science advocacy, and explain how to turn research into an engaging final product that can be found taped to the Dean’s door as well as the grandparents’ fridge. Along the way, she'll share surprising facts about familiar flora and fauna.

Kathleen Mulligan (Department of Theatre Arts) has been named a recipient of The International Alliance of Women (TIAW) World of Difference Award for her project "Wheels for Women", which benefits the residents of the Sakhi Shelter for victims of domestic violence in Kerala, India.

"Each year, through the TIAW World of Difference 100 Awards, The International Alliance for Women recognizes up to 100 extraordinary women – and men - from around the world who have contributed to the economic empowerment of women. This impressive group includes recipients from six continents who have supported women’s economic empowerment across a wide range of circumstances, from small communities to large cities, from rural areas the developing world to the business capitals of the developed world.  What they have in common is their outstanding commitment to better the world through the economic empowerment of women."
