William C. Russell has been named director of the Center for Teacher Education and Martin Berlinrood as associate dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences.
Russell, who will remain an associate dean at the School of Humanities and Sciences, replaces William Scoones, who was named acting dean of the School of Business in August. Berlinrood, the assistant dean since 1988, will assume expanded responsibilities as an associate dean. The appointments were made in conjunction with the decision to move the Center for Teacher Education under the auspices of the School of Humanities and Sciences, said Dean Howard S. Erlich, who added that the reorganization "will allow for closer curricular and programmatic integration, not only with H&S, but with all of the schools."
In announcing the appointments, Erlich emphasized Russell's academic preparation and expertise in teacher education, his continuing involvement in teacher education at Ithaca College, and his critical role in recommending the creation of the center. As director Russell will coordinate teacher education programs and encourage communication concerning teacher education within Ithaca College, as well as be involved with such external programs as Access to College Education and the Saturday Academy.
Russell
has had a broad range of responsibilities since he joined the College faculty
in 1990. He has implemented academic policies and procedures and overseen
summer orientation, academic advising, admissions initiatives, and the
Exploratory Program, and has participated in policy boards for the first
year seminar program and the honors program, among others. He served as
interim director of teacher education in 1991-92.
Before coming to Ithaca, Russell was assistant dean of the Division of Arts and Sciences at State University College at Cortland, research coordinator at the Center for Community Research at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, director of the Student-Parent Aid and Resource Center in Louisville, Kentucky, and assistant professor of educational foundations at the University of Louisville. He has also held teaching positions at the University of Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky University, and Denison University. A graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, he earned a doctorate in educational studies from the University of Cincinnati.
Erlich
said Berlinrood's promotion from assistant to associate dean reflects not
only his important contributions to the school, but also, in the context
of restructuring, his ability and willingness to assume significant additional
responsibilities. "Although impetus for the promotion is the recent
restructuring, the promotion recognizes also Martin Berlinrood's very high
quality performance and his ability to assume and discharge significant
new responsibilities," Erlich said.
Berlinrood came to Ithaca College as assistant dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences in 1988. In that capacity, his responsibilities have included providing administrative support to the curriculum committee and the committee charged with developing an environmental studies major, helping develop and implement the school's general education program, and coordinating the committee that designated courses for the general education program.
Previously Berlinrood was acting dean, associate dean, registrar, and associate professor and chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, among other posts, at Goucher College. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in biology from the City College of the City University of New York and his doctorate in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin.
