 "Whiz Kids" Mentor Dies

Eddie Sawyer, professional baseball's two-time National League manager of the year who led the Philadelphia Phillies to the 1950 World Series, died Monday, September 22, following a brief illness. He was 87.

Eddie SawyerA 1935 Ithaca College graduate with a degree in physical education, Sawyer was a former faculty member and coach. He was a charter member of the Ithaca College Sports Hall of Fame, was named Philadelphia's man of the decade in 1955, and was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1986. In 1993 he was the recipient of the Ithaca College Alumni Association's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Sawyer had a four-year playing career with the New York Yankees minor league team before an injury turned him to managing. He took over the Phillies in 1948 with only seven years of minor league managing experience, and guided his club to the World Series just two years later after beating the Dodgers out for the pennant. The Phillies lost the series to the Yankees, but Sawyer will forever be remembered as the man who led the "Whiz Kids" to baseball's pinnacle.
