Faculty Athletics Representative Appointed

John M. "Jack" Bernard, a professor and the chairman of the biology department at Ithaca College, has been selected as the school's NCAA faculty athletics representative, director of athletics Betsy Alden has announced.

As the faculty athletics representative, Bernard will represent the College and the faculty in relationships with the NCAA.

Ithaca sponsors 25 varsity sports — 13 for women and 12 for men.

"I look forward to working with Jack Bernard," says Alden. "His interest in athletics, along with his commitment to high academic standards, will serve our athletics program and our student-athletes very well."

Interested faculty members were encouraged to apply for the position, and president Peggy R. Williams made the appointment after receiving a recommendation from the selection committee.

Bernard owns one of the longest active terms of service with the Ithaca College faculty. He was hired as an assistant professor of biology in 1964, was promoted to associate professor in 1968, and served as the department chairman from 1973 to 1982. The past summer Bernard was again named department chairman.

He has spent five years as the faculty representative on the Ithaca College Sports Hall of Fame committee.

Bernard received a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and a master’s and doctoral degree from Rutgers University. He has published research on life history, production, and nutrient cycling in wetland plants.
