Guitar Festival to Feature Concert by Andrew York

The third annual Ithaca College Winter Guitar Festival — a daylong affair of workshops, performances, and a guitar exposition — will be held Saturday, February 5, at the James J. Whalen Center for Music. The day will begin with registration at 9:00 a.m. and conclude with an evening concert by guitarist Andrew York. The internationally known composer and virtuoso will play selections of his own work for solo guitar beginning at 8:15 p.m. in the recital hall.

Tickets for York’s performance may be bought in advance at the Clinton House ticket center (273-4497). Tickets will also be sold at the door if seats are available. The cost for the evening concert is $12 for adults and $8 for Ithaca College students and high school students.

Those interested in participating in the festival must register through the Division of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions. Preregistration is recommended; however, registrations will be accepted until the time of the event, space permitting.

Fees for the daylong program only are $35 for adults and $20 for Ithaca College students and high school students. Fees for the entire festival, including the evening concert, are $45 for adults and $25 for Ithaca College students and high school students.

The culmination of the day’s activities — the evening concert by Andrew York — will feature an artist known for compositions that blend classical, folk, and popular music. York has experienced great success both as a solo artist and as a 10-year member of the prestigious Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, with which he has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan.

His solo album Denouement was voted best classical album in a 1994 Guitar Player magazine readers’ poll and was called "a thoroughly satisfying musical statement from one of our most gifted young musicians" by Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine. York’s compositions have been published worldwide and recorded by such guitar luminaries as John Williams and Christopher Parkening.

Activities leading up to the evening concert will include a composers showcase, a composers roundtable, workshops on jazz guitar playing and guitar construction, as well as an exhibition featuring new and vintage guitars, sheet music, and guitar accessories from national dealers.

The guitar festival is sponsored by the School of Music’s classical guitar program and the Division of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions.
