Performance by Magdalen Hsu-Li at LGBT ConferenceThe Central New York LGBT Conference 2000, a three- day program of workshops, speakers, and performers aimed at promoting unity in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered community, will be held at Ithaca College from Friday to Sunday, February 18 to 20.
Students, faculty, and staff may register for the conference at no cost. Those outside the College community may register for a fee of $10. The deadline is February 15. Included in the registration is the cost of the Saturday concert, which will feature singer/songwriter Skott Freedman ’01 opening for Hsu-Li. The performance will begin at 8:00 p.m. in the Emerson Suites, Phillips Hall. Anyone not registered for the conference and wanting to attend the concert may buy a ticket at the door for $3. Referred to as a pioneer among Asian American women in music and named as a finalist in the Lilith Fair Talent Search, Magdalen Hsu-Li has been compared to Tori Amos and Ani DiFranco. "Using her experience as a Chinese American woman, she writes personal lyrics that address larger societal issues head-on," wrote a critic in the Seattle Weekly. Hsu-Li was nominated for a GLAMA (Gay and Lesbian American Music Award) for "Monkeygirl," a single from her 1998 CD Evolution. "Monkeygirl" was listed in GAYBC Radio’s top 10 "best out songs" for 1999. Her new release, Right Side Up, is due to appear this spring. For more information or to register, call conference cochairs Skott Freedman at 375-2978 or Daniel Tillapaugh at 375-4023, or e-mail BIGAYLA@ic3.ithaca.edu.
