Kole Ade Odutola, communications, submitted a paper, "The Media, Society, and Democracy: A Synthesis of Current Thinking," at the 12th annual conference of the National Black Graduate Student Association at the University of Wisconsin-Madison last spring. Monique Brown, exercise and sport sciences, M.S., also attended the conference.

Judith Andrew, library, has completed her first year as chairperson of public relations for the New York State Library Assistants Association. She also represented NYSLAA at the May meeting of the New York State Board of Regents Commission on Library Services in New York City.

Brooke Andrews '01, athletic training/exercise science, received the Glazo-Wellcome Scholarship, which is given annually for academic and athletic training excellence.

Carolyn Byerly, television-radio, delivered the keynote address, "Speak Now: The Role of Advocacy Programs in Setting Media Agendas on Sexual Violence," at the annual conference of the Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs in Wenatchee, Washington, in May.

Mary Ciolek '00, athletic training/exercise science, was awarded this year's Rodney H. Dusinberre Athletic Training Excellence Award, which is presented annually to the senior student athletic trainer who best exemplifies hard work, commitment, and loyalty to the Ithaca College athletic training program. She also received the Janet Bristor Memorial Postgraduate Scholarship, named in honor of 1986 Ithaca College alumnus Janet Bristor.

Rick Couture, physical plant, recently earned the certified executive housekeeper designation through the International Executive Housekeepers Association, a professional organization for managers employed in facility housekeeping. The designation was earned by completing a 330-hour certification program.

The Institute for the International Education of Students has awarded 31 merit-based scholarships nationally to students planning to study abroad, and four of those winners are Ithaca College students. Bonnie Flock '01, television-radio, will study in Adelaide, Australia. Alexander Georgiev '02, international business, will study in Dijon, France. Mark Menges '01, sociology, will study in Salamanca, Spain. Sheila Puhl '02, theatrical production arts, will study in Vienna, Austria.

Kyle Johnson '00, sport management, was one of five winners of the inaugural John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards. He was the only winner from a Division III school. Given by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, the scholarships are used for postgraduate studies in athletics administration.

Mike Matheny, exercise and sport sciences, won the National Athletic Trainers' Association Service Award this year. Founded in 1950 in Dallas, NATA has almost 23,000 members.

Shelley Semmler, institutional advancement, has been appointed to a three-year term on the CASE (Council for the Advancement and Support of Education) Commission on Alumni Relations.

Edward Swenson, music, presented a lecture, "Piano Manufacturing in Mid-19th Century America: A Tour through the Factories of Steinway & Sons, Chickering, and Boardman & Grey," at Oxford University in May.

An article by Gordon Webb, television-radio, has been placed on the Web site of the Rod Serling Memorial Foundation (www.rodserling.com). The article, "Thirty Years Later: Rod Serling's Planet of the Apes," was originally published in Creative Screenwriting magazine and details Serling's involvement in writing the script for the movie Planet of the Apes.

Anesti Zakos '01, art, recently displayed one of his works in a national juried show called Drawing from Perception III at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. In addition, he received a grant from the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts and spent a month this summer at the Saltonstall Arts Colony near Ithaca.
