College Appoints New Registrar

Christopher Knauer, an Ithaca College graduate and former assistant registrar, will be returning to his alma mater as the new registrar. He will begin his duties June 13, replacing John Stanton, who is retiring in May after 26 years in that office.

Knauer’s responsibilities will include administering student records and developing, implementing, and maintaining the student information system. The Office of the Registrar is responsible for the integrity of the academic records for all current and former students.

"Chris comes to us after having served as registrar at two other institutions," says Larry Metzger, dean of enrollment planning. "His colleagues have expressed a high regard for his leadership abilities and communications skills. As an alumnus and former employee, he also has an intimate knowledge and love of Ithaca College. That’s a great combination."

"I felt warmly received at the interview, and when I got the offer, accepting it was a no-brainer," Knauer says. "Taking this job is like coming home."

Knauer began his career in record administration at Ithaca College in 1977, as microfilm coordinator in the registrar’s office. He spent the next 14 years in that office serving in a variety of capacities, including assistant registrar, a position he held from 1986 to 1991. He left the College to become the associate director of admissions at Radford University in Radford, Virginia, and was soon named university registrar. In 1998 he left Radford to become the registrar at Le Moyne College in Syracuse.

"Chris will be a valued addition to our enrollment services team as we look to continue enhancing our student information systems and services," Metzger says.

Active in professional organizations, Knauer is a member of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers and of the Middle States Association of Collegiate Registrars and Officers of Admission.

He graduated from the College with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 1976. In 1990 he earned a master’s degree in communications.
