Violist to Play Masterworks

ChiangVictoria Chiang --- a violist whose playing has been cited by the Denver Post for its dusky beauty and flawless execution --- will give a free guest recital on Tuesday, March 19. The performance will begin at 8:15 p.m. in the recital hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music. Pianist Rita Sloan will join Chiang for the recital.

The program will consist of masterworks of the viola repertoire, including Schubert’s Arpeggione, Bloch’s Suite Hebraïque, Brahms’s Sonata in E-flat, and Enesco’s Konzertstuecke.

Chiang has appeared as a soloist, chamber musician, and recitalist throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, including a solo performance at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Chiang also performs with the Aspen Ensemble --- the first ensemble formed from resident artists of the Aspen Music Festival to bear the Aspen name --- which recently toured Japan. Chiang currently teaches at the Peabody Conservatory of Music and at the Aspen Music Festival.

Rita Sloan began piano studies shortly after her family immigrated to the United States from Russia. While at the Juilliard School, she won the concerto competition and was awarded the opportunity to study at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. She has performed internationally as a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborative artist. Founder and coordinator of the Collaborative Artists Program at the Aspen Music Festival, Sloan is also a member of the Aspen Ensemble. She presently teaches at the University of Maryland.
