Two faculty members spend a semester at the Ithaca
College London Center.
By Stephen P. Schwartz and Diane Driscoll Schwartz
Last
summer a new program was introduced for faculty on sabbatical.
Each year for a semester one faculty member can be assigned to
the Ithaca College London Center. The program is intended to
forge a stronger connection between the "home campus"
and the center in London, based not only on student experience
but on faculty experience as well. "Our hope," says
Tanya Saunders, assistant provost for special programs, "is
to build a cadre of knowledgeable supporters for the Office of
International Programs; create initiatives to internationalize
the on-campus curriculum; and ultimately to develop an Ithaca
presence, beneficial to students and faculty, in Africa, Asia,
and Latin America that is complementary to our study-abroad successes
in Europe."
The faculty
member chosen for the initial sabbatical assignment was Stephen
P. Schwartz, professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religion.
He and his wife, Diane Driscoll Schwartz, associate professor
of mathematics and computer science [both pictured], proved keen
to get involved in many aspects of the Ithaca College London
Center program, including orientation for arriving students,
setting up e-mail and Internet access for staff, helping with
computer problems, joining in class trips, and being a part of
events planned by the staff. Last fall we asked them to share
some of their experiences with us, and they graciously agreed.
