Love That London Center

What a marvelous article in your spring Ithaca College Quarterly about the London Center by Stephen and Diane Schwartz. To say it brought back fond memories would be an understatement. I was fortunate to spend not one but two semesters at the London Center during its early years. To live and experience another culture was a life-changing experience for me.

The Schwartzes’ article also brought back vivid recollections of group trips to Canterbury and Amsterdam. I will never forget the emotions I felt peering into the attic of the Anne Frank House or standing in front of the Van Goghs at the Rijks Museum. My semesters in London turned me into a passion- ate Anglophile and aficionado of all things English. I return to London, my "second home," as often as possible. In 1997 I spent a month there and had the opportunity to visit the London Center. Bill Sheasgreen has done a fine job developing the center, and the wonderful camaraderie among students, faculty, and staff is still present.

"Bombers" Too Aggressive a Nickname

The following is an open letter to the IC administration, faculty, student body, and alumni:

I am a proud IC grad (class of ’88). However, for a long time I have remained perplexed, yet silent, at my alma mater’s use of the aggressive name "Bombers" to describe the school’s sports teams. It is my opinion that aggressive labels such as "bomber," ," and "missile" exacerbate the already fragile society in which we live. At the same time, they do little to promote sport.

IC has shown leadership in several other areas to promote social justice, including diversity and advancing community relations. It is my hope that the IC community would consider renaming its sports teams. Until then, I’ll cheer "Go, IC" — since I can’t get myself to say "Go, Bombers!"

Nameless Faces in Wedding Photos

I’m very, very disappointed that you will no longer print the names of Ithaca College–connected people attending weddings. It’s my favorite part of the Quarterly! People are too hard to identify without your support. Please reconsider this decision.

P.S. Suggestion: Charge us to submit wedding photos? I’ll do it happily when I get married in October ’99.

I read with dismay that the ICQ will discontinue printing names of alumni underneath wedding pictures. I believe this practice will do a disservice to those of us who have been out of school for a while. Our memories aren’t always as good as they used to be, and we need the names printed. What is the rationale for this practice? Please do not answer "space," because there seems to be plenty of it. I know I won’t be alone in saying how much this disappoints me.

It’s a sad day in the history of Ithaca College. Please reconsider.
