Some Ithaca College graduates liked it here so much that they
decided to stay.
About 130 alumni are currently employed by the College. Of
those, about 30 are working hard to find innovative ways to contribute
to the IC community. "We dont have a lot of out-of-pocket
money to donate back to the school, but we are all very willing
to give our time and energy," says Deborah Page 92,
assistant to the director of the Office of Campus Center and
Activities and copresident of Ithaca College Community Alumni.
The
organization was the brainchild of Susan Greene 86, lab
technician in the biology department. She created it in spring
1998 with a service philosophy in mind. When she got letters
asking her to donate to the Colleges Annual Fund, Greene
says, she felt unable to give enough monetarily, but still wanted
to give back to the College in a meaningful way. Greene found
that many alumni were already doing their own volunteering on
campus but hadnt been able to formalize these projects,
pool resources, or create publicity. Now ICCA gives them the
chance to do all that.
Although the group is still in its infancy, ICCAs members
have already invested a lot of time and energy in campus events.
Theyve assisted with Network Nights, all-campus career
fairs, Commencement, Reunion, the Day of Service, and other special
events.
Many people are unaware of the large number of alumni working
on campus. Greene, who received an undergraduate degree in philosophy,
worked in campus safety and the provosts office before
moving to her current position. "It used to be two or three
years before I discovered a coworker was also an alum,"
Greene says.
