Goodman Packs Ford Hall

Democracy Now's Amy Goodman at IC

In December award-winning journalist and media activist Amy Goodman spoke in Ford Hall about "Independent Media in the Time of War" to a packed house -- the overflow audience members were seated on stage with the speaker. Host of the independent radio and television show Democracy Now, Goodman focuses on "grassroots efforts to enhance and ignite democracy."

Goodman received the George Polk Award and the Golden Reel Award in 1998 for her radio documentary "Drilling and Killing: Chevron and Nigeria's Military Dictatorship," and has received numerous other journalism awards. At Ithaca she spoke about the dangers of war; human rights and social justice; threats to free speech and personal liberties; corporate and governmental irresponsibility; and the need for more varied media sources. The visit was sponsored by Students for a Just Peace and an anonymous donor.
