HSHP associate dean John Bonaguro was elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the American Association for Health Education
At the National Association of Schools of Music meeting
in New Orleans, music school dean Arthur Ostrander was elected as a member
of the board of directors and chair of the association’s 13-state northeast
region. His term will run three years
The Human Rights Commission of Tompkins County honored Lisa Maurer, coordinator of the IC Center for LGBT Education, Outreach, and Services, with its Sandy Pollack Award
The disparities in public health and health services between
racial groups were examined at the fall Symposium on the Politics of Race,
Culture, and Health 2002, held on campus and sponsored by the Department
of Health Policy Studies in collaboration with the Office of Multicultural
Affairs. B. Lee Green, associate professor of health and kinesiology at Texas
A&M University and an expert on community health issues, delivered the
keynote address
Pat Woodworth, Jim Conklin, and Marty Sternstein of the
mathematics and computer science department received an NSF grant of $213,000
for scholarship support of low-income students aiming to major in computer
science, with emphasis on recruiting and retaining minorities. The grant
provides partial scholarship support to 12 students in 2003–4 and 6 per year
for each of the following three years
Clinical assistant professor of occupational therapy Melinda Cozzolino was awarded a $265,938 Allied Health Project Grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration Bureau of Health Professions. She is working on a model for interdisciplinary interventions for adults with a chronic neurological disorder, such as a stroke; her research will involve students and faculty from OT, physical therapy, therapeutic recreation and leisure services, speech-language pathology, and gerontology
Exercise and sport sciences professor Gary Sforzo received the service award from the mid-Atlantic regional chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine, given to an individual who provides distinguished service to MARC and who promotes the mission and objectives of the organization
Professor and chair of sport studies Ellen Staurowsky was elected president of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport
TV-R majors Justin Daly and Tasha Wright received this
year’s New York Communications Alumni Internship Award. Also known as the
Big Apple Award, it is funded by New York metro-area alumni. Daly, a senior,
interned at Fox News; Wright, also a senior, interned with MTV.
