Dick Carmean '60 retired in 1989 from his job
as the athletic director for the Ithaca City School District.
He and his wife, Millie, moved to North Carolina to enjoy the
beautiful weather and serene countryside. But after a few years
they got the itch to do something "different," so they signed
up for the Peace Corps. They served in the Solomon Islands from
1997 to 1999.
Their home was in a remote village of leaf-and-stick
houses, where they did a variety of jobs, including millwork
with the women's association. Their greatest accomplishment was
working with villagers to install a water-supply system. And
while there were literally no amenities, Carmean says, "It was probably the most rewarding
thing we've ever done." |
