Important Notice: Discontinuing Studio tool in Canvas

By Jenna Linskens, April 21, 2024

Announcing an important change in our instructional media environment effective June 30, 2024

After thorough review and consideration, the college has ended its contract with Studio, the embedded media platform in Canvas. This change will enable the college to streamline our educational technologies and for staff to provide more focused media support using our primary media tool, Kaltura. Also, this will allow us to repurpose budget funds for other educational technology software that supports the broader academic community.

When compared, Kaltura is a more robust media platform used more widely by college faculty, students, and staff. It has an easy-to-use Kaltura Capture media recording interface, video-based quizzing tools, and robust analytics. Kaltura is also fully integrated with Canvas. Lastly, Kaltura supports our multiple livestream events in Park School of Communications, School of Music, Theater & Dance, and campus events like Convocation, All-Campus Gatherings, and Commencement. Kaltura also offers unlimited storage of media files (audio, video, and images).

How does this impact me? What are my next steps?

Users of Canvas Studio will receive an email later in April with additional information and suggested actions to take including how to download media files they want to keep. For now, we recommend users log in to Canvas and click on the Studio icon in the main navigation pane. This will allow you to review all personal media files in Studio and begin making a list of the files and which ones you need to keep. *Note -if you do not want to keep any media files, you do not need to take any action at this time.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we make this transition. Please reach out to our IT support desk (servicedesk@ithaca.edu) for any further assistance or inquiries.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and your continued commitment to excellence in our academic community.

Sincerely,
