June Work/Life Line: Fire Safety

Contributed by Alison Bowman on 06/17/2012

Did you know that more than 3,500 Americans die each year in fires and approximately 18,300 are injured? An overwhelming number of these fires occur in the home.

There are many ways to prevent fires in your home and around you. Some general tips include:

  • Every home should have at least one working smoke alarm
  • Use appliances wisely
  • Alternate heaters
  • Plan your Escape

For more tips and information on fire safety, please visit the U.S. Fire Administration’s website: http://www.usfa.fema.gov/citizens/home_fire_prev/

Don’t forget to come and learn about Fire Safety and Extinguishing on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 from 12:00pm-1:00pm in the Peggy R. Williams Center, HR Conference Room GL-52.  Timothy Ryan, Manager from the Environmental Health and Safety Department, will teach us the importance of fire safety and how to use a fire extinguisher with a live demonstration. RSVPs are appreciated to 4-8000 or e-mail benefits@ithaca.edu.

Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Alison Bowman in Human Resources at abowman@ithaca.edu or x4-8000. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible.
