Ellen Staurowsky, professor of sport management and media
Ellen Staurowsky was recently invited to contribute to an opinion piece for the New York Times about the dramatic increase in the number of Olympic events. She says, “as a sign of changing times, the expansion of Olympic events from 38 in 1980 to 86 in 2010 is the result of athletic specialization moved forward by the quest to press the limits of human possibility merged to the corporate interests of sporting goods manufacturers, media moguls, the merchants of tourism and national governments.”
