EXCHANGE TO JAPAN

Akita International University

This is an exchange program located in Akita City, in northern Japan, a 50 minute flight from Tokyo. The university was recently opened, in 2004, and has a small enrolment. The university is, however, a rigorous, four year public university specializing in the liberal arts and with undergraduate degrees in Global Business and Global Exchange. Japanese language courses and a program of Japanese Studies are available to international students, as well as organized fieldtrips.

University of Tsukuba
NOTE: Please check with the Office of Int'l Programs to ensure this exchange is available.

Ithaca College has an exchange program set up with this top university, located in the countryside about an hour away from Tokyo. Many of the classes at Tsukuba are conducted in English, so no prior knowledge of Japanese is required. Students from any major can apply for a trimester or a full academic year. Best of all, students can apply for a highly competitive scholarship from the Japanese government, which provides round-trip airfare and a monthly living expense stipend.

As with all Ithaca College exchange programs:

  • Tuition will be paid to Ithaca College, and living expenses are paid directly in Japan.
  • State, federal and institutional financial aid may be applied to the program cost, though actual aid amounts will be re-evaluated based upon actual program expenses.
  • Credits earned abroad are guaranteed to transfer back to Ithaca College, and grades received will be calculated in cumulative GPA.
  • A leave of absence is not required – students remain active Ithaca College students while abroad on an exchange program.
  • Housing will be provided either in residence halls or in off-campus apartments, depending upon location and availability
  • Meal plans are not available, but students will have access to kitchen facilities, cafeterias and restaurants.
