When I arrived at Ithaca College in late August, I was a little bit worried about finding ways to get involved beyond the classroom. I shouldn’t have been worried at all. It’s been just over a month since I moved in and I’ve already gotten involved on campus.
I recently joined the editorial staff of The Ithacan as webmaster. I’ve been spending many hours each week working to turn The Ithacan’s website into a vibrant and reliable news source for the IC community, as well as the wider Ithaca community.
I’ve also been attending meetings for the IC Business Idea Competition each week. With a friend, I have been working on a business idea to enter into the competition. The sessions each week are run by local entrepreneurs and business owners who have a wealth of knowledge to share.
I have also been able to take advantage of several amazing opportunities available to Park students over the past month. I attended a talk on marketing given by two IC Alumni who now work for the CBS marketing department. They talked about how they market their shows, and we got a sneak peak at the pilot of their new show, The Crazy Ones. I also was able to attend the Park Distinguished Visitor talk and reception. The visitor, YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley, came to IC to speak about his history at YouTube and his new project, MixBit. It was really cool to get to hear from someone who has had a successful life in the internet industry, a career I’m considering.
I’ve been really happy with the opportunities available to me and the potential to get involved with activities and organizations as a freshman, and I’m excited to get get more involved as the year goes on.
