Cameras and Light Meter Requirement for Incoming CPMA Students

For all of you Freshmen and transfer students who will be joining us in the fall, you are probably by now aware that CPMA students are required to provide their own 35mm, manually operable film camera, and light meters. Since a lot of people have questions about this, here are a few more details.

If you sign up to take Introduction to Photography in the fall (about half of incoming students will take Intro. to Photo, and Half will take Cinema Production 1 their first semester), you should come to school with a camera. Many students borrow a camera from a parent or relative--which is perfectly acceptable, as long as it is in good working condition, and has a manual exposure option, with independent control over aperture and shutter. If you're wondering why you are being required to provide such "old tech" equipment, instruction in our curriculum is designed to acquaint students with what they're likely to currently encounter in the professional world of media production--and right now in photography, there exists a messy, challenging mix of analog/chemical photography, and digital/electronic image making. Good new 35mm cameras from Nikon and Canon can be purchased online for about $300, and the enlarged images they produce will often be of better quality than  those made from a digital camera costing twice as much. If you do not take Introduction to Photography in the fall, you may hold off on acquiring a camera until spring semester.

All CPMA students at some point will have to purchase a light meter. Do not go out and buy one this summer, however. When you take Cinema Production 1 you will be given advice from your professor on what meter makes sense, and how you may make a cost-conscious choice.

If you have further questions, feel free to contact Steve Skopik, the CPMA Department Chairperson.
