Isabel Braverman '12, GritTV
Isabel Braverman, a junior Journalism major, spent the Summer 2010 interning at GritTV with Laura Flanders, an independent public affairs show taped in New York City that airs five times a week on Free Speech TV.
When Isabel came to work everyday there would be two to three guests on the show. Her job was to greet the guests, wait for them to get ready in the make-up room, and escort them to the studio. Isabel watched the show on set and assisted with editing during the interviews, such as making sure names and titles were correct. Isabel also helped the producer with research by finding video clips and pictures of the guests.
The highlight of Isabel’s internship was producing her own news segment. “I was able to pitch ideas and produce a segment on gas drilling. I went to a protest and public hearing where I was able to interview people who were in favor and against the issue,” she says. “I helped edit and write the ten-minute long script and had a lot of fun doing everything on my own. It was extremely rewarding to watch the segment air.” While Isabel enjoyed the excitement of meeting the guests on the show, she found the experience beneficial to her professional development. “The most valuable thing I gained from the internship was seeing how television shows are actually put together, from the story line, to conducting research and all the technical stuff involved. Everything comes together to put on a thirty-minute television show.”
Isabel utilized what she learned in the classroom and directly applied it to her internship. “In journalism classes you learn a lot about the research process and the importance of interviewing. Prior to this internship I did not have any real life experience interviewing. At GritTV all interviews are filmed so I was able to see what I could work on in the future.”
After graduation, Isabel would like to move to New York City as soon as possible and pursue Journalism. She hopes to either work for a magazine or newspaper. Isabel’s dream job is to work for Vanity Far or The New Yorker.
And sometimes internships turn into jobs:
Anna Uhls '07, WashingtonPost.com
"This internship may have changed my life. Not only was it a dream come true to work for The Washington Post, but it also sparked my interest to work in online journalism. I love the optimism of the future of news on the Web and the innovation in developing it. Getting the chance to work along the top journalists in the country at washingtonpost.com is surreal and invaluable for my career."
Anna's quote about her amazing internship was also a glimpse into her future. She graduated in May 2007, and now works full time at WashingtonPost.com.
Anna interned at the paper's online site while spending a semester at Ithaca College's Washington, D.C. Program. Prior to that, Anna was poised to work in print journalism, even scoring four internships at print publications. Now she says she would encourage all student journalists to try many different mediums of journalism to best prepare themselves for the changing world of the news, and to possibly spark an interest they may not have known they had.
