“Can You Trust Mainstream News Media? Racial and Other Biases,” will be the topic of Janine Jackson’s campus lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. in Emerson Suites. The event is sponsored by the Park Center for Independent Media.

One of our country’s leading media critics, Jackson is the program director of the media watch group FAIR (Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting). She is producer and host of FAIR’s nationally-syndicated radio show CounterSpin, which is heard locally on WRFI.

 The Ithacan has been named a national Online Pacemaker Finalist by the Associated Collegiate Press. The Pacemaker is ACP’s top honor, commonly referred to as “the Pulitzer Prize of collegiate journalism.” 

Entries for the award were judged during the Spring 2016 semester (Kira Maddox, editor-in-chief; Evan Sobkowicz, managing editor/webmaster). Winners will be announced on Oct. 22 at the Fall National College Media Convention in Washington, D.C.

 The Ithacan has been named a Gold Medalist for 2016 in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association's annual college publication critique.

Each year the CSPA evaluates member papers on overall content, news, depth reporting, features, opinion/editorial, sports, arts/entertainment, editing/headline writing, and design/graphics based on more than 150 specific criteria. This year the paper scored 832 on the critique’s 1,000-point scale. The CSPA consistently ranks The Ithacan as a Gold Medalist, its highest category. The publication was evaluated in the critique’s ”hybrid” category, which is defined as “print publications that provide live coverage via website between print editions.”

 The Ithacan has been named one of 10 national finalists for the Columbia Scholasstic Press Association’s 2017 Crown Award in the competition’s “hybrid” category. The Hybrid category is defined as “print publications that provide live coverage via website between print editions.”

The list of finalists in the category this year includes publications from Indiana University, Iowa State University, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Pennsylvania and Oklahoma State University, among others. The winners, who receive either a Gold or Silver Crown, will be announced at the Spring National College Media Convention in New York City, March 11–14.

 Ithacan Staff Writer Max Denning, a junior journalism major from Portland, Oregon, has been awarded the First Place National Mark of Excellence Award for General News Reporting for 2015 by the Society of Professional Journalists.

The award was for Denning's story “This Shouldn't Happen Here," which covered Ithaca College resident assistants' protest against alleged racial aggression and harassment by Public Safety officers. It appeared in the September 3, 2015, issue of The Ithacan
