5th Annual HSHP IPE Case Competition

The IPE Case Competition – with preliminary Zoom Workshop – is an opportunity for students from across HSHP programs to learn from, with, and about each other.

Overview

The case competition is open to all HSHP junior, senior, and graduate students. No previous experience is necessary!

In a case competition, you are provided with a fictional "case" about a current healthcare issue. The case is intentionally designed to have many possible solutions, requiring a multi-disciplinary perspective to analyze and identify next steps. It is a great opportunity for you to practice bringing skills from your discipline, within a team-based atmosphere, to addressing a challenging health-related problem. You will also get to meet and work alongside students outside of your degree program.

Introductory Zoom Workshop

Hosted by HSHP alumni, faculty, and staff, the introductory workshop will be held via Zoom on Thursday, March 21 from 7:00pm-8:30pm. By participating in this online workshop you will:

  • Learn more about the ins and outs of participating in a case competition.
  • Build confidence that you can successfully participate, even with no previous experience!
  • Hear about the IPEC Core Competencies and why they are important for your future as a health or human performance professional.
  • Leave enthusiastic about the importance of interprofessional education and practice (IPE and IPP).
Case Competition

The case competition occurs in one evening, on Thursday March 28 from 5:15 pm - 11:00 pm in the Center for Health Sciences atrium (lobby) and various classrooms throughout the building. The evening begins with a free dinner and ends with an awards ceremony. You can read more below about what you can expect the night of the competition.

Team-Based Problem Solving

Following dinner, you will be assigned into an interdisciplinary group of students representing several different HSHP disciplines. The case will be shared after dinner.

You will have approximately two hours to review the case, discuss solutions with your team members, and develop a presentation describing your proposed solution.

As you work on the case, you will be able to seek guidance from floating health care experts. You will also have time to practice your presentation with your teammates before sharing with the judges.

Presentation to Panel of Judges

Your team will present your case solution to a panel of judges, comprised of Ithaca College faculty, staff, and alumni as well as health care experts from the community.

The top three presentations will be selected for the finals, and you will present again to the judges and all competition participants. The evening will conclude with an awards ceremony.

Business dress is recommended. The Center for Career Exploration and Development has a free career closet that you can access for clothing as needed!

“I had a great experience participating in the 2023 IPE case competition! I worked on a team with 4 other students who were all in a different major than me. In the beginning, we had a brainstorming session where we listed out a bunch of ideas that we had. It was interesting to hear from my teammates and different ways to approach the case.

Time flew by as we prepared our presentation. It was exciting to then share our finalized approach with a panel of judges. Throughout the night, I learned the benefits of working as a team and how important it is to view a case from more than one perspective. I would encourage other students to join the competition and to have fun!”
