The 2008 Senior Student Show will be on exhibit in the Handwerker Gallery from April 17–May 18, 2008. Students submit artwork to the Department of Art and photographic work to the Department of Cinema, Photography, and Media Arts.

The Handwerker Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition, Running the Numbers: An American Self-Portrait, at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 28.

In his large-format photographs, Seattle-based artist Chris Jordan explores contemporary American culture through the austere lens of statistics. Each image documents a specific quantity of goods consumed by Americans in a given time frame: Cell Phones, 2007, depicts 426,000 of them, equal to the number of cell phones retired every day; Paper Bags (detail above), 2007, depicts 1.14 million brown paper supermarket bags, the number used every hour; and Plastic Bottles, 2007, depicts two million plastic beverage bottles, the number used every five minutes. These photographs give the cold, hard facts of American consumption a tangible reality.

Thursdays at the Handwerker presents evening of music by John Cage, curated by School of Music student Thomas Murphy '10, at 6:30 p.m. on February 7.

John Cage is best known for his role in expanding the boundaries of what is considered music. Murphy's program presents two of his works for spoken word, two important electronic works, and the most controversial music work of the 20th century, 4'33". Audience participation is required.

The Handwerker Gallery's Tuesday Salon has now moved to Wednesday! The Wednesday Salon is a Handwerker Gallery program aimed at providing students, faculty, staff, and members of the community a forum outside of a classroom setting for intellectual discussion and debate. Topics are selected by a guest discussant, who provides a 10-minute introduction and moderates the ensuing conversation.
