Showcase Offers latest in Technology

Educational Technology Day ’98 at Ithaca College will be held on Thursday, March 26, in the Emerson Suites, Phillips Hall, and adjoining areas of the Campus Center. The event, which opens at 9:00 a.m. and will feature the latest in computer and communication technology, is one of the highlights of the second annual Ithaca Technology Week.

Educational Technology Day ’98 affords the opportunity for faculty, staff, and students at colleges and universities across the region to see how technology is being used in higher education, as well as what’s in store for the future. Visitors can take in the vendor technology showcase, a College showcase, and a series of one-hour seminars and demonstrations. Last year, more than 1,500 people attended.

Free and open to everyone, Educational Technology Day is aimed primarily at higher education but also attracts representatives from local businesses and the community. This is the largest multi-platform, multi-vendor show for higher education in upstate New York.

Running throughout the day, the vendor technology showcase features demonstrations of the latest in hardware and software technology. The emphasis is on how today’s technology can be used by faculty, staff, and students in and out of the classroom. The College showcase features faculty demonstrating how they are making use of educational technology. The seminars and demonstrations will be conducted throughout the day, and past seminars have covered such topics as the integration of music and technology, computers as a multimedia tool, mobile computing, using the computer in the classroom, and overviews of other educational technology. Last year, more than 32 vendors participated in the showcase, including representatives of Addison Wesley, Apple, Digital, Sun, NEC, and Oracle.

Educational Technology Day ’98 is one of the anchor events of Ithaca Technology Week, March 21–27, cosponsored by the College’s Office of Academic Computing and Client Services and IthacaNet, Inc. The week-long series of events will open with the annual Networking Tompkins County conference, slated for March 21. IthacaNet and ACCS have encouraged area businesses and community organizations to hold technology-related events during this week, to highlight the many facets of technology that are shaping the lives of local residents.

While Educational Technology Day ’98 is free, those interested in attending are asked to register in advance. For more information or to register, call ACCS at (607)
