Cameron Awarded $198,000 NSF Grant

Vicki Cameron, associate professor of biology, has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation for $198,000 entitled "Genetic Analysis of the Function of Cytochrome Oxidase Subunits Encoded on Mitochondrial DNA in Yeast." The four year grant will support her research, carried out in collaboration with Ithaca College biology and biochemistry majors, on the function of a protein that is essential in most organisms and is required for energy production.

In addition to providing funds for equipment and supplies, the grant also provides summer stipends for a total of 12 Ithaca College undergraduates over the next four years.

This latest grant brings the total outside funds awarded to biology faculty since 1988 to more than $2 million, an average of approximately $200,000 per year. The grants, some with biology or other Ithaca College colleagues and some with investigators from outside the College, have been used for various purposes including support of research programs, construction of laboratory facilities, purchase of equipment, and development of courses.
