Hailed by Strings magazine as "the finest classical bass player of our time," Edgar Meyer is also a member of a bluegrass trio and has been a guest bass player for such recording artists as Garth Brooks, Hank Williams Jr., James Taylor, the Indigo Girls, and the Chieftains. Versatility is a word that fits Meyer. So is excellence. One critic recently proclaimed him "quite simply, the best bassist alive." His works have been premiered by the Minnesota Orchestra and the Emerson String Quartet. Meyer’s Double Concerto for Bass, supported by a grant from the Meet the Composer/Reader’s Digest commissioning program, was premiered by the San Luis Mozart Festival Orchestra in 1995. Meyer is in great demand as both a performer and a composer in music festivals, including Aspen, Caramoor, Chamber Music Northwest, Marlboro, and Tanglewood. He also appeared as a regular guest artist at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival from 1985 to 1993, during which time he composed six works for the festival. A member of the bluegrass trio Douglas/Barenberg/Meyer, he also performs regularly with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Meyer and colleagues Yo-Yo Ma and Mark O’Connor reached critical acclaim with their release on the Sony Classical label of Appalachia Waltz, which remained at the top of the charts for 16 weeks. The trio was featured on the Late Show with David Letterman and at the 1997 presidential inaugural gala. The 1999–2000 concert series will conclude on Monday, April 3, with a performance by the Bang on a Can All-Stars, a "new age" ensemble.
