History of Local Indian Tribe to Be Topic of Talk

Heriberto Dixon, a Tutelo Indian and a lecturer at the State University of New York College at New Paltz, will speak on Friday, March 23, on the history of the Tutelo tribe in Ithaca. The talk, which is free and open to the public, will start at 4:00 p.m. in Textor 101. Weather permitting, a field trip to a former Tutelo village site will take place on Saturday, March 24.

The Tutelo originated in the southern United States and in the 18th century migrated to eastern Pennsylvania and central New York, establishing a settlement in the Ithaca area on the east side of Cayuga Inlet. This settlement was destroyed in 1779 during the Sullivan campaign against the Indian allies of the British. Dixon has been researching the history of his tribe and will share the results of his research during his talk.
